Resources for Nonprofits

Our region is made up of 21 separate political jurisdictions and they come together through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government

T
here are several Chambers of Commerce (eg. District of Columbia, Fairfax, Montgomery) around the region and the Greater Washington Board of Trade convenes the business community from around the community.

The Washington Post has a 'Giving Map' that identifies nonprofits around the region.  To add your nonprofit to their map (or to correct an entry) send them an email

There are several nonprofit umbrella groups in our area.  The National Council of Nonprofits has three local associations in our area including:

They each offer classes on nonprofit management and provide leadership in public policy among many other things.

Washington Grantmakers is the 'network of giving in the National Capital Region.'  Their members are "a powerful network of funders, partnering with nonprofits and governments, that is committed to improving the region by touching lives and changing communities one grant at a time."

The Roundtable also has two local affiliates.

Nonprofit NoVA and their Members build the strength, visibility and influence of nonprofits in Northern Virginia.

Nonprofit Montgomery focuses on building the strength, visibility and influence of nonprofits in Montgomery County, MD.

The Alliance for Nonprofit Management is a professional association of individuals and organizations devoted to improving the management and governance capacity of nonprofits to assist them in fulfilling their mission.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals is a professional association of individuals responsible for generating philanthropic support for a wide variety of nonprofit and charitable organizations. 

Board Cafe is an online publication and resource that can be useful to nonprofit board members.

Board Source is a good resource for practical information, tools and best practices, training, and leadership development for board members of nonprofit organizations worldwide.

Bridgestar, an initiative of the Bridgespan Group, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing leadership for the nonprofit sector. 

The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region has dedicated itself to facilitating individual, family and organizational philanthropy by helping others invest time, money, and commitment into making the Greater Washington region a better place to live.

Community Wealth Ventures has published Social Franchising: A New Path To Wealth for Nonprofits which examines the groundbreaking concept of social franchising and its potential to offer nonprofit organizations reliable, unrestricted funding to support mission activities.

Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington sustains and increases appreciation, support and resources for arts and culture in our region.  They serve and provide direct programming to over 300 arts and cultural institutions through marketing, including Cultural Capital and TICKETPLACE.org; professional development, including arts marketing and arts management workshops; services and resources including Business Volunteers for the Arts.  

The 
DC Fiscal Policy Institute conducts research and public education on budget and tax issues in the District of Columbia, with a particular emphasis on issues that affect low- and moderate-income residents.

D.C. Hunger Solutions works to end hunger and improve nutrition, health, school achievement, and well-being in the nation's capital by improving anti-hunger policy and increasing the availability and use of federal nutrition programs.  

Fair Chance identifies and partners with promising community-based youth and family organizations in communities of need in Washington, D.C. 

The Foundation Center's library/learning center at 1627 K Street NW in the District offers free access to databases or grantmakers and grants, books and articles on philanthropy and nonprofit management, classes on grantseeking and related topics.

The Goodman Center helps nonprofits recruit, propose, persuade, and present more effectively through workshops and other resources.

Grantmakers for Effective Organizations is dedicated to promoting learning and encouraging dialogue among funders committed to building strong and effective nonprofit organizations. 

Greater DC Cares is Greater Washington's leading coordinator of volunteerism and corporate philanthropy, harnessing the energy, skills, goods and talent of the region for nearly 15 years.  

GuideStar is a searchable database of nonprofit organizations in the United States. All organizations are invited to provide supplemental data to their listings, including information on mission, program services, finances, accomplishments, goals, and leadership.

Independent Sector is a leadership forum for charities, foundations, and corporate giving programs committed to advancing the common good in America and around the world.

The Nonprofit Finance Fund uses capital effectively to support the highest aspirations and most generous impulses of people and communities.

The Nonprofit Sector Research Fund of the Aspen Institute awards research grants and organizes convenings to expand knowledge of the nonprofit sector and philanthropy, improve nonprofit practices, and inform public policy related to nonprofits.

NPower of Greater DC offers technology consulting, training and support services designed and priced specifically for the nonprofit sector.

Smith Consulting focuses on providing compensation expertise and advice on a cost-effective basis to the not-for-profit community.  Pete Smith has over thirty years of experience in providing executive compensation consulting to all sectors of the economy, from major corporations and leading universities to small nonprofits.

The
SPIN Project strengthens nonprofit social justice organizations, small and large, to communicate effectively for themselves. The SPIN Project provides accessible and affordable strategic communications consulting, training, coaching, networking opportunities and concrete tools.

Volunteer Fairfax is a regional leader in developing and delivering creative solutions to community needs through volunteerism.  In addition to providing volunteer resources, they increase the capacity of the nonprofit sector through volunteer management training, resource and information sharing and emergency response volunteer coordination.

Venture Philanthropy Partners selected to be in inaugural portfolio of CNCS' Social Innovation Fund to launch youthCONNECT, which will include partnerships with College Summit National Capital Region, Latin American Youth Center, and others, according to a press release and Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Bright Beginnings' Betty Jo Gaines and Tahirih Justice Center's Layli Miller-Muro are 2010 Brava! Business Awardees! See their profiles in SmartCEO.

DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corp's Ellen London talks about the impact of investments in organizations like Life Pieces to Masterpieces, on WAMU 88.5FM.

DC Fiscal Policy Institute's Ed Lazere says the "District's Financial Woes are Being Misdiagnosed" in an op-ed in The Hill Rag.

Children's Law Center's Judith Sandalow says DC voters should also ask mayoral candidates about the high rate of poverty, in an op-ed on WAMU 88.5FM.

Other Leadership Development

Leadership Greater Washington identifies challenges in the region, drives dialogue, and creates connections that facilitate solutions. The year-long program provides intensive hands-on study and in-depth discussion of regional issues including the arts, education, economic development, affordable housing, public safety, inclusiveness and equity, health, and leadership. 

Project LEAP (Leaders Emerging through Ability and Potential), part of the Center for Nonprofit Advancement, offers individuals with three+ years of nonprofit experience the opportunity to strengthen leadership skills. Executive directors not eligible.

Transform (Center for Social Leadership) is an interactive and experiential program available for current and future nonprofit leaders to discuss crucial skills areas with a diverse group of nonprofit leaders who will share their successes, challenges and insights into how to run an effective nonprofit organization.
