Deputy Mayor BB Otero

Written by Chuck Bean, on February 04, 2011

The Nonprofit Roundtable welcomes the appointment today of Beatriz ‘BB’ Otero as Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services by the District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray.  ‘BB’ is the founder and President of CentroNía and a Roundtable Member.

I can’t think of anyone better equipped to take on this role as Deputy Mayor under Vince Gray.
BB’s experience is at the intersection of practice and policy, a perfect fit for this leadership role.  No one has more solid boots-on-the ground experience than BB, and BB has been at all the important policy tables in the past twenty years – leading on child welfare, family support, education, charter schools, and more.  She knows service delivery and she understands complex systems and how they can be reformed.

I first met BB on a Red Cross mission to Colombia in 1986 -- she was my team leader.  In the past 25 years, I’ve seen CentroNía bloom under her leadership and emerge as a national model.  As a member of the Nonprofit Roundtable, I’ve seen her engage in advocacy and systems reform.  I have appreciated her as a go-to speaker on leadership, multiculturalism, and policy reform.  She’s been a mentor to many – inside CentroNía and throughout the District.

This is a great day for the District.  Although Mayor Gray is effectively inheriting a $600 million budget shortfall, I can’t think of two more well-equipped people to face this challenge than Mayor Gray and BB Otero.  I’m confident they will lead with courage, purpose and direction.

The combination of Mayor Gray and BB Otero presents a once-in-a generation opportunity to get the partnership right between government and the nonprofit community.  We can solve more problems working closely together.  I’m more hopeful than ever.

So, let’s spend about ten minutes celebrating, and then roll up our sleeves and get to work!

Bringing a leader with such insights into the health and human service needs of the community she has served so well, is great news. Now more than ever, governments must work with the partners and citizens who can help them prioritize and find solutions that work. Congratulations to Mayor Gray and to Deputy Mayor Otero.
